Trustee and Pension Management Association (TPMA)

The Trustee and Pension Management Association was established in 2005 to "Represent pension trustees and ensure they are properly trained and developed".

The Pensions Act 2004 introduced new requirements for the trustees of occupational pension schemes to have appropriate knowledge and understanding to enable them to properly function as trustees.

The requirements apply both to individual trustees and to directors of a corporate trustee.

Knowledge and understanding required

The Act specifies that trustees and trustee directors must have an appropriate knowledge and understanding of:

  • the law relating to pensions and trusts
  • the principles relating to the funding of occupational pension schemes
  • the principles relating to investment of the assets of these schemes.

"I have been a scheme trustee for 34 years and wasn't sure what I might gain from what was billed as an introductory course. Whilst much of the course served to reinforce and update my knowledge it also served as a very useful reminder to review several of our current practices. I now feel much more confident about how to deal with the challenges presented by the new reulatory framework and would unreservedly commend this course to any trustee - regardless of their experience. I will encourage all my trustee colleagues to attend."
